Creating and Managing Shipping Protection Policies

Arta makes it easy to review Shipping Protection policies for both Arta Shipping and Client Shipping. From your Dashboard or via API, check the status of the policy, the premium paid and amount insured. From there, quickly link to the related Arta shipment, including Track shipments for policies booked for Client Shipping.

Shipping Protection for Arta shipping is quoted and booked through our Quote Request or Hosted Session forms or API endpoints.

Alternatively, Shipping Protection can be quoted and booked independently for your own parcel shipments via FedEx, UPS, DHL and USPS.

  1. Request an Estimate (optional) - Preview protection costs and requirements before purchasing. This API can be integrated into your checkout to provide buyers with the option to purchase coverage for their shipments.
  2. Create and Purchase a Policy - Once the order is packed and ready to ship, secure coverage for your shipment.

Managing Policies

Requesting an Estimate

Estimates provide a quick preview of protection costs and requirements without any commitment. This lightweight resource helps you plan and communicate costs to your buyers at checkout.

To request an estimate, provide minimal object details:

  • Object subtype (required)
  • Object value and currency (required)
  • Estimate currency (defaults to USD)
  • Mode (Live or Test)
  • Tags (optional)

What you’ll receive

  • Unique shortcode for reference
  • Coverage type (Client Shipping)
  • Total insured value and currency
  • Premium estimate and currency
  • Timestamp and mode
  • Tags

Per Object

  • Object subtype
  • Value and currency
  • Packing Requirements - Valid packing types for the object (e.g., cardboard box, double box, foam-lined box)
  • Transport Service Requirements - Eligible parcel services based on object value (e.g., FedEx Ground, UPS Next Day)
  • Service Requirements - Required services like signature delivery

Specific packing types, services, and transport speed requirements must be followed when shipping to maintain protection coverage. For packing and speed, any listed option satisfies the requirement. For services, all listed services are required.  See Coverage Requirements for more information.

Creating a Policy

Policies represent purchased coverage for your shipment. Once created and confirmed, policies actively protect your items from shipment through delivery.

Required Information

  • Tracking number(s) for each package
  • Object details (subtype, value, currency)
  • Origin address and contact
  • Destination address and contact
  • Policy currency

Optional Information

  • Additional object details (title, description, references, creator, creation date, images)
  • Shipment public and internal references
  • Tags

The Policy Lifecycle

Policies move through several statuses:

  • New - Initial state when first created, before purchase
  • Pending - Validation in progress after purchase
  • Confirmed - Validation successful, coverage active
  • Disqualified - Validation failed (requirements not met)
  • Active - Shipment in transit
  • Completed - Delivered (claims window open)
  • Closed - Claims window expired (7 days post-delivery)
  • Expired - Unconfirmed policy expired after 30 days

Purchasing Coverage

After creating a policy in the New state, you can purchase coverage by confirming the policy via the API or Sellers Dashboard. This triggers validation:

Validation checks include:

  • Tracking labels are valid and not yet in transit.
  • All required information is complete.

Validation outcomes:

  • Success - Policy status updates to Confirmed and a Track Shipment is created. A Track Shipment allows you to use Arta’s tracking tools and notifications for shipments you arrange yourself.
  • Failure - Policy status updates to Disqualified with details about what failed.

Coverage Requirements

Shipping Protection requires adherence to specific standards to ensure your items are properly protected:

Packing Requirements

Valid packing types vary by object type and ensure items are properly secured. Common approved packing includes:

  • Cardboard boxes
  • Double boxes
  • Foam-lined boxes
  • Stabilizing boxes
  • Strong boxes
  • Economy and parcel crates

For Packing Requirements, any listed option satisfies the requirement.

Transport Service Requirements

Eligible parcel services are determined by the total value of items being shipped. Higher-value shipments require faster, more secure transport services. Requirements distinguish between domestic (shipments within the US) and international routes.

Examples by value range:

  • $0 - $5,000: Domestic ground services
  • $50,000 - $200,000: Overnight and priority services

The specific transport services available for your shipment are returned in both estimates and policies based on your object values and shipping route. For Transport Service Requirements, any listed option satisfies the requirement.

Service Requirements

All shipments require signature delivery to ensure secure handoff and proper documentation of delivery.  Depending on the value and route, additional services may be required. For Service Requirements, all listed services are required.

Coverage Scope

Stand-alone Shipping Protection covers object value only. It does not include:

  • Shipping costs
  • Duties and taxes
  • Losses due to improper packing or non-compliant transport services
